Sharpening the Fireblade: Honda CBRRR By John Ivy Mention literbikes and all kinds of things spring to the mind, from early eighties air-cooled steel framed racebikes, to lead sleds and to high speed, long wheelbase superslab inhalers.
Honda, having enjoyed great prior success with this model, enters the red-hot sportbike marketplace with the new CBRRR, introduced to the press at Las Vegas Motor Speedway recently. This year brings the tenth consecutive year of market growth for motorcycles, with sales for up nineteen percent. That translates into , motorcycles sold and the total goes to 1,, units when ATVs are included. This seems rightly so, with the technology involved in sportbikes pushing the performance envelope.
The U. Indications are that September eleventh has had no adverse effects on motorcycle industry sales numbers. The unsaid punch line, of course, the claimed horsepower. Tadao Baba, to perform some more Baba Magic. Optimum power to weight ratio and overall balance have been hallmarks of the CBR line, and the evolutionary continues this focus.
Visually, the most noticeable changes from last years CBR and the new CBRRR are the blacked-out aluminum frame, the massive rear swingarm and the more angular and aggressive fairing and bodywork. The rear swingarm is said to showcase HRC racing technology, upgraded with extensive use of pressed, stamped sections replacing most of the cast components used previously.
It is a beautiful piece, larger and with additional bracing but 9. With Honda paying careful attention to chassis tuning, the swingarm has less lateral stiffness but is more rigid torsionally to balance the overall chassis. Honda maintains the pivotless swingarm design, and the blacked out aluminum main frame runs the same geometry numbers as the prior version, but has also been tuned to deliver increased torsional stiffness and reduced lateral stiffness as compared to the chassis.
Tapered steering head bearings replace last years ball bearings in the quest for increased feel at the clip-ons. The fuel tank is updated, now 10mm shorter and 10mm lower, which, in turn, move the rider seating position that much closer to the front wheel. The tank is hinged and now uses a prop rod for ease of maintenance.
Fuel filler cap is now aluminum, as is the front fairing stay bracket and the footpeg brackets. Front brake rotors are mm items and the front brake calipers are all new, sporting stainless steel internal pistons with a special Nimuflon coating and Teflon coated seals for reduced friction and better feel.
The trailing pistons have been reduced slightly in size and updated brake pad material specified. Front and rear wheels feature smaller hubs and spokes for an important reduction in unsprung weight of grams each. Other than the aluminum endcaps, the muffler is now completely Titanium with a weight savings of 11 ounces for the unit. The collector remains a stainless steel piece, the HTEV exhaust valve is unchanged, switching the path of the spent gases from degree collector design to degrees on to both as the engine rpm increases.
A very tasty LED tail light assembly graces the new, slimmed down and oh-so-trendy angular tail cowling. The new front fairing of the CBRRR not only is striking in appearance, the rider benefits from a 10mm taller windscreen and improved aerodynamics.
The cc powerplant grew out of the cc design by means of a 1mm increase in piston diameter. Cylinders are now a scant 1. The forged 75mm pistons are lighter, have shorter skirts, reduced dome thickness and are screen printed with a LUB coating for friction reduction.
A few additional grams have been removed from the piston pins. Forged camshafts open the valves, but the exhaust valves now close by means of a single spring rather the pair used previously, and this combines with the lighter piston assembly to produce quicker revving characteristics and less stress on components.
Total engine weight for the cc mill is now pounds. Throttle body size has increased from 40mm to 42mm and new injectors utilized. Similar electronic voo-doo cooks up a new generation electronic control unit, ECU, with more memory, new mapping and faster processing speeds.
Of course, California market machines wear the requisite evaporative canister, catalyzer and tweaked mapping and are down a whopping one horsepower. They meet emissions standards today and deserve a green halo award or similar accolade. I immediately felt a preference for the black and silver version, very striking in the flesh with the pointy nose and tail.
The new does not feel large, once aboard and is surprisingly thin and wasp waisted in the seating area, allowing for easy shifting of your body from side to side. The controls, the level of fit and finish , all top shelf and you simply know you are on a Honda.
Some patience was needed scrubbing and heating up the tires and this allowed me to settle in to the feel of the The front yields effortless turn in capabilities, feels stable and friendly as I drop it into and out of all lean angles. Fork springs are progressive, specified as being from. Same weight as the F4i, yes siree, and very chuckable. As I check lower revs I notice but a slight on-off throttle snatch, nothing problematic and transparent at any real level of speed.
The Honda people At this morning pace there are a couple gears good for most corners and I can short shift down the straights without any apparent loss in acceleration. Turn one, a left hander off the front banking becomes the impromptu brake evaluation point. There is a big transition in the pavement as you come on the infield, all the braking needs to be done early not to bottom of the front end, but there is big time to be made staying on the gas. Killer brakes, simply awesome. The new caliper and pad combination is sending back incredible feel at the lever and really haul the down from sixth gear.
I start pushing harder, working on my drive exiting corners and find the power delivery of the CBR becoming quite entertaining. The brakes are fantastic but when I started really honking the binders on, the front end gets down into the harsh zone of the suspension and, in two corners in particular, the CBR would hop the front wheel for a hundred feet or so on the brakes. This did not occur every lap, but seemed to relate to how suddenly I tried to brake. When my group was not riding I went out to observe others and noticed I was not the only one experiencing the problem.
There is likely a relatively easy fix for this, either through rebound adjustments or fork and spring tuning that hot-shoes will undoubtedly perform, but as is, it was unsettling at times. He had just returned from testing at California Speedway and was very upbeat. They have increased their testing program far beyond what it has normally been and are expecting great things with rider Mike Hale on board.
Erion feels the chassis is noticeably better than the version they campaigned last year and says it is exactly what they need to run up front in They have a new engine program underway that is yielding good results, and implications were made than the inline four cylinder powerplant holds a future in Hondas future Superbike plans.
If you could just see Kevin Erion smile. The first session was a disapointment however. The tires took some time to get scrubbed and heated up, noticeably longer than the OEM Michelin tires. And the stability of the CBR suffered, especially at high speeds it seem to dance about and was just twitchy and skittish in places were it had been rock stable, my guess is the stiffer carcass construction and sharper profile were the culprits.
That, combined with the race tires reluctance to heat up made for a confidence sapping session. Next time onboard my inner dialogue was to just dismiss my concern with the subtle handling gremlins, I know these tires are sticky and the is superbly balanced and friendly, just get over it and get after it. And it was again a sweet thing. With the tires up to operating temps there was a new reward, the ability to roll on serious power while cranked way over and feel the CBRRR calmly hook up and slingshot away into the next timezone.
A brief stint aboard an earlier machine instantly confirmed the progress in power delivery and braking prowess achieved with the , and the older engine also transmits more vibration to the rider. We did not get the opportunity to ride the on the street or to evaluate behavior in traffic and other such civilian duties, but the balance of the CBRRR is such that I would expect above average levels of competence in all aspects.
It was a great first impression of the CBRRR, Honda certainly has stepped up its ante for open class competition. How is fares in head to head competition with its noticeable rivals from Suzuki and Yamaha remains to be seen.
